PROGRAM OVERVIEW

  • 4 hours/week of private Arabic lessons, tailored to your schedule and interests

  • Full-time internship at an organization in Amman

  • Opportunities to participate in the cultural activities taking place during the Summer Intensive Arabic Program

The Supervised Internship Program follows the same academic schedule as the Summer Intensive Arabic Program. The course consists of two individual sessions, each covering a period of 5 weeks. Students are encouraged to apply for either or both of the programs, and are welcome to combine them by taking one session of each.

Students enrolled in the Supervised Internship Program will participate in a supervised internship at the organization of their choice while learning Arabic part time at the Sijal Institute. Upon their application, students will be given a wide array of internship options, from which they will rank their top three choices. Sijal will then coordinate with the organizations and place students at one of their desired locations. Host organizations will be paid a stipend to ensure both accountability and equitable compensation for their work in supervising.

For their Arabic learning, students will receive four hours weekly of private classes, tailored to their level and learning goals. Class schedule and content can be arranged according to each student’s responsibility at their chosen organization, so that their Arabic studies can help them better engage at their workplace.

Sijal will also offer an orientation session to help guide students in navigating their work environment and a mid-semester reflection session to discuss students’ experiences while still at their work sites. To date, we have had students complete internships or volunteer opportunities at local and international organizations in fields related to development, public policy, health, international relations, mass media, environmental issues, cultural heritage, and many more.

The supervised internship program is appropriate for students and individuals from all backgrounds, including undergraduate students looking to develop professional skills, graduate students working towards deepening their experience in the field, and individuals looking for a career change or work in an international environment.

*Please note that the decision as to whether an internship application is accepted ultimately rests with the organization. While the Sijal staff are more than happy to offer mentorship to students during the course of the program, students are kindly reminded that the organization of their choice may be subjected to its own working culture.
